Kanha National Park

Madhya Pradesh

Kanha National Park may be found in the Maikal range of the Satpuras in Madhya Pradesh, the Indian state at the geographical centre of the country. The central Indian highlands include these mountains. Some people refer to the national park as the Tiger reserve, and it’s often touted as one of the world’s purest wildlife areas. In 1879, Kanha National Park was constituted as a reserve forest; by 1933, it had been upgraded to the status of a wildlife sanctuary. It spans the borders between the Mandala and Kalaghat taxing jurisdictions. Its prominence was increased in 1955 when it was declared a national park.

About Kanha National Park

The heart of India, Madhya Pradesh, is home to Kanha National Park, which is located in the Maikal range of the Satpuras. These mountains are a part of the central Indian highlands. The national park is becoming more well-known as the Tiger reserve, and oddly, it is being hailed as one of the most pristine wildlife regions in the entire globe. Kanha National Park was first designated as a reserve forest in the year 1879 and was later reclassified as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1933. It is located in two different revenue districts: Mandala and Kalaghat. In 1955, it was designated as a national park, elevating its status even further.

Within the Maikal series of hills lies the expansive Kanha National Park, which has a total area of 940 square kilometres. The entire area of the Kanha Tiger Reserve is 1945 square kilometres after taking into account both the buffer zone and the core zone.

For those who have a passion for nature, the landscapes and the surrounding lush meadows, in addition to the woody strands and the dense maroons of forests, provide magnificent opportunities for sightseeing. The presence of crystal clear streams in the midst of the dense forest not only cleans the environment but also makes the biodiversity unrivalled, which in turn makes the place more attractive and endearing. A well-known author named Rudyard Kipling drew ideas from the vibrant landscape of this land in order to create one of his most notable works, which is known as “The Jungle Book.”

The Kanha National Park is a great habitat for a diverse array of wild animals, including the magnificent tigers, the most populated barasingha, and an innumerable variety of flora, birds, reptiles, and insects. Because of the highly developed infrastructure that is specifically designed for tourists, this reserve has managed to captivate a great number of visitors from all over the world. The Bammi Dadar, often referred to as the Sunset Point, is the top spot in this area to go to have the most fun possible.

Wildlife in Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, which contributes to the park’s overall tranquil atmosphere and draws in a large number of tourists throughout the year. The tropical central highlands of this arena are an ideal environment for the majesty and beauty of the wild creatures that inhabit there.

Even though the list might go on indefinitely, the wild species are the only ones that make the natural environment smell and feel more alive. This is despite the fact that the list could go on forever. The Barasingha, also known as the Swamp Deer ((Rucervus duvaucelii), the Indian Wild Dog, and the Most Famous of All, the India Tiger, all call Kanha National Park their home. The presence of a sizeable tiger population on the Kanha territory is primarily responsible for this park’s widespread notoriety as the “Tiger Reserve.” In addition to that, the world-famous barasingha may be found in great numbers in this reserve; as a result, it is entirely appropriate to refer to this species as the “jewel of Kanha National Park.”

Mammals

The Royal Bengal Tiger, also known as the Panthera Tigris, is a member of the Panthera family and is a member of the species Panthera Tigris. The word “Bagh” refers to this animal in the local language, and both India and Bangladesh consider it to be their National Animal.

The Swamp Deer is a member of the Cervidae family, which is the family of hoofed ruminant animals. It is most often known as the Swamp Deer. The scientific name for this species is Cervus Divaucelii, and the specific name honours a French naturalist by the same name, Alfred Duvaucel. Because of the deer’s well-known antlers, which each have twelve points, the animal is referred to as a Bara Singha in the native language (in Hindi Bara means twelve). On the other hand, they might have as many as 20 talons. These bony features, known as antlers, are exclusive to the deer family and can only be found on male deer. Only male deer have these antler-like structures. These deer are also referred to as “dolhorina” in the Assamese language, where “dol” is the word for marsh. Both Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have adopted it as their official mascot. The hard ground swamp deer, also known as the Branderi Barasingha, can also be seen here in all of its splendour, peacefully meandering around the park.

In some circles, this instrument is also known as the Ussuri Dhole or the Indian Dhole. It is genetically related to members of the Canis family and is a member of the cuon alpinus alpinus species. One of the most notable inhabitants of Kanha National Park, the Indian Wild Dog, is a member of the cuon alpinus family.

Birds

This most beautiful animal of the natural world is found in Kanha National Park, which is known for its entrancing calm. Because it is known as one of the most important highlands in central India, the Kanha Tiger Reserve is regarded as the place to go to see the greatest number of different types of flora and animals, including approximately 300 different kinds of birds.

These bird species have the potential to pique the interest of many people who are passionate about birds. The tropical setting of Kanha Reserve is truly remarkable, turning it into a veritable paradise for those who enjoy bird watching. Those who enjoy watching birds will have plenty of opportunities to do so in this tropical location.

Reptiles

Both herbivorous and carnivorous creatures can be found in Kanha National Park, as it is their natural habitat. This incredible reserve is home to a wide variety of animal species, many of which may be found in abundant numbers. It is the only habitat of the extremely uncommon hard ground Barasingha, sometimes known as “the jewel of Kanha,” and is most famous for its population of Indian Tigers.
The Indian monitor lizard, the fan-throated lizard, the Indian garden lizard, the Indian cobra, the russell’s viper, the common rat snake, the common skink, the Indian monitor, and so on and so forth.

Nature Safari India organized our private 2 Weeks Safari in Central India plus a couple of Sightseeing and we are very happy to having choose this agency. I found them on the responsible tiger tourism association (TOFTigers) and I liked them from the very first contact. From the first email more than two years ago to the end of our trip in April 2022, the service was great, the selection of the itinerary, Parks, lodges and guides was perfect. And this although the very difficult travel situation due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our trip had to be postponed and rescheduled twice (we were supposed to travel at the end of March 2020), Mr. Deepkul was always very professional, competent, responsive and helpful with all my requests and he went the extra mile. We had a wonderful time in India, we saw a lot of tigers and wildlife, and we hope to come back soon. We warmly recommend Nature Safari India to everyone and in the future, we’ll surely book another tour with them.

We did 5 days of safaris with Sharad Vats's team, in Kanga and Pench, in April 2022. Right from the planning to the actual execution, Sharad was accessible, knowledgeable and helpful, to ensure we got a good experience. Not only was the itinerary planned and tweaked multiple times to suit us, but our accommodation and food needs were also taken care of well. We enjoyed the trip immensely, especially because Sharas understood that we were not just after tiger sightings, but enjoyed birds and trees and other wildlife too, and recommended an itinerary accordingly. The accommodation and food was great. And my particular need of a wifi connection even in these remote areas (because there was a study commitment I could not miss) was also met. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing and totally unforgettable trip to India organised by Nature Safari India, in particular Deepkul (and previously Manjeet). I organised the trip 2 years ago just as the pandemic hit, I had been communicating with Nature Safari India constantly for quite a few months until we finalised on an itinerary, nothing was too much trouble and replies to queries were almost instant. When it came to the actual holiday, all we had to do was get to New Delhi. (As a warning it isn't straightforward to get visas anymore) From then on all was taken care of. We were met at the airport and were looked after from that point, including checking us into the hotel and providing a car and driver for our exclusive use until we left New Delhi. We were driven from each location by drivers who looked after us incredibly well, stopped/slowed down if we wanted to take pictures, they also pointed out interesting sites as we passed. If you have time, I would recommend travelling by car to different locations, as you see a lot more of India. Deepkul monitored us through our whole holiday, checking that we were OK, getting reports from each of our guides and making sure we were happy with our holiday. Our guides and drivers, throughout, were fantastic, so friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful and polite.
