Panna National Park

Madhya Pradesh

Panna National Park is a shining example of successful tiger conservation. After losing its entire tiger population to poaching between 2006 and 2008, the park welcomed three relocated tigers in 2009. These tigers adapted well to their new home, and thanks to the dedicated efforts of Mr Murthy, the population has now risen to 55, including cubs. Panna is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Crocodiles, Gharials, over 300 bird species, various Deer species, and monkeys. Boat safaris along the Ken River offer a unique opportunity to spot crocodiles and an array of riverine birds.

About Panna National Park

Panna National Park holds the distinction of being the first in history to successfully reintroduce and protect tigers. Following the complete loss of its tiger population to rampant poaching between 2006 and 2008, the reserve reintroduced three tigers from other parks in 2009. These tigers established their territory in Panna, and under the dedicated leadership of then Field Director Mr Murthy, the population has now grown to 55, including cubs. Today, Panna is home to Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Crocodiles, Gharials, over 300 bird species, monkeys, and several species of deer. While jeep safaris remain popular, boat safaris on the Ken River offer an equally thrilling way to observe crocodiles and waterbirds in their natural habitat.

Panna National Park, often likened to a diamond mine for India, possesses the rare charm of invigorating and calming its visitors simultaneously. A tranquil boat ride on the Ken River is enough to reveal the forest’s hidden wonders, teeming with diverse life forms and proudly guarding its land since its revival post-2008. Though once a victim of poaching, Panna now flourishes on the pristine grounds of a broadleaf dry deciduous forest, continuing its legacy as a thriving sanctuary for wildlife.

Wildlife in Panna National Park

The park supports a diverse array of wildlife, including spotted deer, nilgai, four-horned antelope, hyenas, crocodiles, and apex predators such as the tiger, leopard, and sloth bear. It is also home to several lesser-known feline species, including the jungle cat, rusty-spotted cat, desert cat, toddy cat, and civet. Panna National Park, located in India, is considered prime tiger territory, now harbouring an estimated 35 tigers. These majestic big cats have staged a remarkable comeback over the past seven years, owing much to the dedicated efforts under the Project Tiger initiative.

The region’s abundant calcium-rich terrain supports a particularly robust population of sambar deer—one of the largest in India. The peak summer months present the best opportunities for wildlife sightings, and exploring the park via boat or jeep safari offers a thrilling and rewarding way to observe the animals in their natural environment.

Mammals

In addition to the magnificent tigers, there are also leopards, jungle cats, rusty spotted cats, and caracals that belong to the five kinds of wild cats. However, the populations of these cats are rather low.

other predators, including jackals, wild dogs, wolves, and hyenas, among others. Wild boar, striped squirrels, and langur monkeys find shade in the deep thickets, and as they graze in the open grasslands, you might glimpse spotted chital deer, sambar, and nilgai.

Birds

Over two hundred different kinds of birds have been identified in this area of Panna National Park. These birds range in size from small bee-eaters and rollers to large eagles, hawks, and buzzards. Additionally, there are birds of the water, such as fish eagles.

Reptiles

In Panna National Park, India, you have a chance of seeing the ‘Big Four’ snakes of India, which are the spectacled cobra, Russell’s viper, common krait, and saw scaled viper. In addition, long-snouted and marsh crocodiles lie in wait there.

Nature Safari India organized our private 2 Weeks Safari in Central India plus a couple of Sightseeing and we are very happy to having choose this agency. I found them on the responsible tiger tourism association (TOFTigers) and I liked them from the very first contact. From the first email more than two years ago to the end of our trip in April 2022, the service was great, the selection of the itinerary, Parks, lodges and guides was perfect. And this although the very difficult travel situation due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our trip had to be postponed and rescheduled twice (we were supposed to travel at the end of March 2020), Mr. Deepkul was always very professional, competent, responsive and helpful with all my requests and he went the extra mile. We had a wonderful time in India, we saw a lot of tigers and wildlife, and we hope to come back soon. We warmly recommend Nature Safari India to everyone and in the future, we’ll surely book another tour with them.

We did 5 days of safaris with Sharad Vats's team, in Kanga and Pench, in April 2022. Right from the planning to the actual execution, Sharad was accessible, knowledgeable and helpful, to ensure we got a good experience. Not only was the itinerary planned and tweaked multiple times to suit us, but our accommodation and food needs were also taken care of well. We enjoyed the trip immensely, especially because Sharas understood that we were not just after tiger sightings, but enjoyed birds and trees and other wildlife too, and recommended an itinerary accordingly. The accommodation and food was great. And my particular need of a wifi connection even in these remote areas (because there was a study commitment I could not miss) was also met. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing and totally unforgettable trip to India organised by Nature Safari India, in particular Deepkul (and previously Manjeet). I organised the trip 2 years ago just as the pandemic hit, I had been communicating with Nature Safari India constantly for quite a few months until we finalised on an itinerary, nothing was too much trouble and replies to queries were almost instant. When it came to the actual holiday, all we had to do was get to New Delhi. (As a warning it isn't straightforward to get visas anymore) From then on all was taken care of. We were met at the airport and were looked after from that point, including checking us into the hotel and providing a car and driver for our exclusive use until we left New Delhi. We were driven from each location by drivers who looked after us incredibly well, stopped/slowed down if we wanted to take pictures, they also pointed out interesting sites as we passed. If you have time, I would recommend travelling by car to different locations, as you see a lot more of India. Deepkul monitored us through our whole holiday, checking that we were OK, getting reports from each of our guides and making sure we were happy with our holiday. Our guides and drivers, throughout, were fantastic, so friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful and polite.
